David Beckham said last night that he was joining Milan on loan to give himself "the best chance possible to make the World Cup squad", after it was confirmed that he would move to the Serie A club in January.
The LA Galaxy midfielder will spend five months in Italy after the Major League Soccer season ends to maintain his form and fitness ahead of the World Cup finals in South Africa next year.
Beckham made a similar move last season, initially on a three-month deal, but impressed so much his stay was extended until the end of the Serie A campaign. He feels he must be playing in Europe to convince England's manager, Fabio Capello, that he should go to a fourth World Cup.
"I need to give myself the best chance possible to make the World Cup squad and playing for Milan on loan will help me to do that," the 34-year-old said. "I genuinely enjoyed my time at Milan and I look forward to meeting the players and staff again."
Milan's vice-president, Adriano Galliani, told his club's website: "We are very happy to see David Beckham in the Rossoneri jersey again after the splendid experience of last season."
Beckham's first Serie A game this season could be against Genoa at the San Siro on 6 January. In the meantime he will continue with LA Galaxy throughout the MLS Cup play-offs, with his team's next game on Sunday. The play-off final is on 22 November.
Following the conclusion of the MLS season, Beckham and the rest of the Galaxy squad will travel to Germany for the club's post-season tour. He will officially join Milan on 28 December and will remain with the club until their season ends.
Beckham thanked Galaxy for allowing him to rejoin Milan and said: "I'm committed to LA Galaxy and MLS in the long term and remain as passionate as ever about growing the game of soccer in America. I'm completely focused on ending this season on a high note with my club by winning the MLS Cup."
