Samsung lancera cette semaine au Canada le Samsung Wave, le premier téléphone de la compagnie à utiliser son «nouveau» et encore peu connu système d’exploitation Bada. Je me suis entretenu la semaine dernière avec Vlastimir Lalovic, directeur à la réalisation des produits sans fil chez Samsung pour en savoir un peu plus sur ce nouveau système d’exploitation.
Même si on l’a présenté dans les médias comme étant un tout nouvel OS, Bada est en fait une évolution du système d’exploitation que Samsung utilise actuellement dans la plupart de ses téléphones de milieu de gamme (les «feature phones» en anglais), le SHP (Samsung Handheld Platform) OS. Le SHP OS peut être retrouvé notamment dans les Samsung Forever, Corby, Flight et Advance.
Ce système a été doté d’une nouvelle interface et de nouvelles fonctionnalités, mais la grande nouveauté avec Bada est la présence d’un SDK qui permet à n’importe quel développeur de créer des applications qui seront vendues dans la boutique Samsung Apps, de la même manière qu’Apple offre des applications iPhone dans son App Store et que Google en offre pour Android dans l’App Market.
À ce jour, la boutique de Samsung est plutôt limitée avec environ 300 applications (30% de payantes et 70% de gratuites), mais Samsung espère pouvoir en offrir 7000 d’ici la fin de l’année, selon ce que m’a confié Vlastimir Lalovic.
Visuellement, Bada OS rappelle beaucoup Android, surtout sa version TouchWiz 3, que l’on retrouve sur les nouveaux Samsung Galaxy S. On a le choix de plusieurs écrans d’accueil que l’on configure avec des raccourcis et des Widgets, comme avec Android, et la liste complète des applications est accessible à l’aide du bouton central du téléphone.
Avec ce nouveau système d’exploitation, Samsung transforme donc ses feature phones de milieu de gamme en téléphones intelligents.
Pourquoi investir dans Bada alors que la compagnie semble sur le point de se faire un nom avec les téléphones Android? Il est difficile de savoir ce qui se passe vraiment dans les coulisses internes du géant coréen, mais selon la compagnie, le passage du SHP OS à Bada n’aurait pas été si compliqué, et le système maison leur permettrait une plus grande liberté.
Le Samsung Wave est disponible en Europe depuis quelques semaines, et celui-ci sera finalement lancé le 8 juillet au Canada sur le réseau de Bell, avant même d’être lancé aux États-Unis. Il s’agit d’un téléphone performant, qui devrait être l’appareil phare du système d’exploitation. Nous y reviendrons sous peu, lorsque j’aurai eu l’occasion de l’essayer plus en profondeur.
