      Mount Holyoke College
    South Hadley, MA (map)

With a rich history, Mount Holyoke is the oldest womens college in Americahaving been founded in 1837and continues to be a leader in womens education. Its innovations as a pioneer in womens education served as a model for sister schools Vassar and Wellesley Colleges. Thanks to its small classes taught in an intimate, open environment, Mount Holyoke has been voted #1 Best Classroom Experience. Students are offered a broad range of academic opportunities at the school; as a member of the Five College Consortium, Mount Holyoke also offers its students the chance to take courses at Amherst, Hampshire, Smith, and the University of Massachusetts. Mount Holyoke boasts successful alumni from a broad range of fields including poet Emily Dickinson, former Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao, and suffragist Lucy Stone.

Hailing from 70 countries and 48 states, the Mount Holyoke student body pursues a wide range of interests and passions through the schools 110 clubs and organizations. As a means of encouraging comfort among first-year students, the junior class organizes a system each year known as Big/Little Sisters in which a third-year student is paired with a freshman, promoting a mentor-like relationship. In addition, a free bus ride to the nearby towns of Amherst and Northampton provides easy access to coffeehouses, clubs, theaters, galleries, and restaurants.

    Admissions Information

While it may initially appear higher than average, Mount Holyoke's admission rate of 58% more reflects the niched nature of the school and its applicants than it does the ease of the application process. Because Mt. Holyoke is a small, female liberal arts college, it is more likely to attract and accept applicants whose interests align with its own. As such, while not required of applicants, the school's median standardized test scores are well above average. Admissions officials have indicated that a student's academic record, GPA, recommendations, class rank, and admissions essay are the most important factors in the admissions process.

Consideration for admission is also given to an applicant's involvement in extracurricular activities, character, talent and ability in a discipline, volunteer and work experience, interview, and status as a first-generation college student. While not as important, additional regard is given to factors including alumni relation, geographical residence, racial/ethnic status, standardized test scores, and applicant's level of interest in the Mount Holyoke.
