The story “Ada & Zangemann – A Tale of Software, Skateboards and Raspberry Ice Cream” inspires the software freedom community because it covers more than the simple value of learning to program. It also covers the importance of control over technology and its impact on society. In this way the story is inspiring many kids, teens, parents and many others to learn programming and shape technology.
In this presentation, Nico Rikken and Matthias Kirschner will tell the story how the automation developed over time. We'll share the inspiring stories from the community that leveraged the automation and influenced its development. The technical challenge of the automation is fun, but the community stories give it meaning and motivate me to keep at it.

To celebrate I Love Free Software Day 2026 in Rotterdam, we will be gathering at Snackbar Frieda (Bajonetstraat 49 3014 ZC) and participate in the workshop “Knitting Our Internet”.
Knitting Our Internet is an interactive journey through the history of the Internet, and a collective rethinking of its future.
The activity consists of a face-to-face workshop, providing tangible and simple examples about how the Internet works, simultaneously questioning the very essence of today’s mainstream social networks. Its main purpose is to expose the critical limits of surveillance capitalism, centralization, and its environmental impact.
After acknowledging the challenges the digital domain is currently facing, participants are encouraged to reinterpret social networks starting from decentralization, envisioning more human, collective, and participatory digital futures.

On the “I Love Free Software Day” on February 14, the Berlin group of the Free Software Foundation Europe invites you to a workshop on personal digital independence in the workshop room of the Pablo Neruda Library.
Software has long determined many aspects of our daily lives. Many decisions are made with the help of digital assistants. Digital independence seems to be a distant prospect. After a short introductory talk on Free Software and Digital Independence, we will take a few minutes to present our favorite everyday helpers and then divide into small groups to discuss everyday problems with software.
The workshop will take place on February 14, 2026, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Pablo Neruda District Central Library (Frankfurter Allee 14 A, 10247 Berlin). The event will be in German, though English conversations are possible. Participation in the workshop is free of charge.

Matthias Kirschner we will read "Ada & Zangemann - A Tale of Software, Skateboards, and Raspberry Ice Cream" . This illustrated book tells the story of the famous inventor Zangemann and the girl Ada, a curious tinkerer. Ada begins to experiment with hardware and software, and in the process realises how crucial it is for her and others to control technology.

Platform regulation is a hot topic. Not only the EU but several countries are regulating big tech’s enormous economic power.
The DMA in the EU is an example of such regulation, aimed at devices manufacturers, app stores, search engines, browsers and cloud services. The law impacts Free Software due to a series of obligations related to interoperability, side loading and installing of apps. Big tech is very reactive to this law. For instance, Apple started three litigations against the Commission due to the enforcement of the DMA.
This talk will explain why regulating big tech is key for Free Software, and what steps were taken by the FSFE to protect Free Software in such challenging processes.

📖 A new educational activity with Ada & Zangemann is coming to Nembro (Bergamo - Italy). Join us for an afternoon of reading followed by a workshop on making and technology! The event will be held at the “Tullio Carrara” Cultural Center in Nembro* on November 15, 2025, starting at 3:00 p.m.
The activity is aimed at children aged 6 to 10 accompanied by an adult and it is part of a wider range of initiatives promoted by BgLUG and the FSFE to disseminate and promote Free Software.
Admission is free, reservations required (at the library or online).
📖 About the book: The famous inventor Zangemann lives in a large villa above the city. Both adults and children love his inventions and desperately want to have them. But then something happens: Zangemann wants to see his inventions up close once again and so he goes for a walk in the city when, with a loud thud, a child hits him on the shins with his skateboard. Ouch! Enraged, the inventor makes a drastic decision... But Ada, a bright girl, understands what is happening. Together with her friends, she devises a plan. This illustrated children's book tells the story of the famous inventor Zangemann and Ada, a curious and enterprising girl. Ada begins experimenting with hardware and software and, in the process, realizes how important it is to control technology, for herself and for others. A book that stimulates children's interest in experimentation and encourages them to shape technology. For ages 6 to 106.

Public procurement is more than an administrative process: it can serve as a powerful lever for reducing vendor lock-in and strengthening technological sovereignty across Europe. For this, a Free Software First approach is needed. But how can Free Software be procured without rewarding freeloaders and openwashers? Introducing and applying award criteria beyond price is essential for this.
Simply prioritising Free Software in tenders can incentivise some vendors to openwash proprietary products or undercut providers who actually develop and maintain Free Software by selling code they did not create or support themselves, without contributing back to the original developers. Such destructive market behaviour will not lead to technological sovereignty and also harms the Free Software ecosystem, undermining the intended benefits of fair procurement.
In this talk, Johannes Näder will discuss how public administrations can detect and mitigate these practices by introducing effective and fair procurement criteria — a topic the Free Software Foundation Europe has been working on intensively in recent years. We will also explore how the upcoming EU procurement directive reform could support this shift and how it should be designed to advance Europe’s technological sovereignty through Free Software and the “Public Money? Public Code!” principle.

Currently the perspective of women and other underrepresented communities have not being included so at this workshop we want to explore our role in shaping an inclusive, open and digital sovereign future together!
Together, we’ll reflect on the barriers we face (from access and visibility to inclusion and recognition) and share strategies, stories, and practical examples that have helped us thrive in Free Software. Our goal is not only to build solidarity and support, but to surface good practices that can make Free Software truly inclusive.

In last year’s SFScon, the FSFE shared perspectives of the trends in Free Software legal and licensing that we’ve observed over the years while working with Free Software projects that were supported by the EU’s Next Generation Internet (NGI) initiatives.
Since then, much has happened that has affected how all parties working within these NGI initiatives view software and tech development in relation to rapidly changing international norms.
Gabriel Ku Wei Bin will speak about shifts in perspectives among Free Software developers within the NGI framework that the FSFE has observed in the past year, and the impacts these shifts have on the Free Software ecosystem.

Discussions about digital sovereignty, cybersecurity, interoperability, strategic procurement and budgets show that we need a dedicated, secured long-term funding programme for Free Software in Europe.
The EU has supported the Free Software ecosystem through funding schemes like NGI and several pilot projects in the last years. However, these funds can be easily removed, as we have seen in the NGI budget cut for Free Software in summer 2024. It is also piecework rather than a well thought-out long-term strategy to achieve clear goal. This exposes a larger issue: that software freedom in the EU needs more stable, secure long-term financial support.
Alexander Sander will discuss clear objectives for such a budget as well as the necessary steps to achieve them. Also he will analyse the current situation and present proposals for upcoming legislation.

The Fediverse is a large, decentralised social network that continues to grow. Since its beginnings in 2008, text-based platforms such as StatusNet, Friendica and Mastodon have dominated. In this session, Tobias Diekershoff takes a look at what’s out there in the network that’s beyond just text. Starting with well-known video and image-sharing services such as Peertube and Pixelfed, we will explore other projects and the opportunities they offer creative podcasters, streamers and 3d artists.

As societies grow in complexity, interoperability becomes fundamental. From water sewage systems, to transport and telecommunications, interoperability has served to increase human interaction. However, the history of interoperability is marked by a contradiction: while companies benefit from depending the incentives, they become adversarial when their services become object of interoperability regulations.
An example is how the EU is regulating interoperability under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The DMA is a EU law aimed in increasing fair competition, imposing broad interoperability rules on “gatekeepers”, understood as very large companies dominating digital markets.
Lucas Lasota presents the work of the FSFE to make sure the DMA is implemented and enforced in a developer-friendly way. We’ll look at what the DMA means for developers building alternative app stores, emulators, browsers, and other tools empowering user choice and freedom.
Unfortunately, gatekeepers are already making it unnecessarily difficult for Free Software developers to request and obtain the interoperability the DMA guarantees, often through legal, technical, or bureaucratic hurdles. We want to change that, and have been following the developers journey to request interoperability, making sure their issues are highlighted to the European Commission.
We’ll introduce the DMA Interoperability Survey, a project to collect real experiences from developers who request access under the DMA. Free Software plays a key role in reclaiming user control over technology, but to compete fairly, it needs real interoperability.

Dario Presutti presents the latest development regarding router freedom in Italy. In particular, I will highlight FSFE’s latest contribution to the consultation opened by Italy’s telecommunications regulator, AGCOM, regarding freedom of terminal equipment in fiber networks.
Italy is one of the European Countries granting router freedom to users. However, exceptions to this freedom in fiber networks proposed by telecom operators and confirmed by AGCOM in 2019 undermine users’ freedom to choose their terminal equipment.
In February 2025, AGCOM initiated a regulatory process to determine whether consumers can choose and use their own routers/modems in fiber networks (FTTx). The talk will indeed present FSFE’s argument presented in the contribution to AGCOM, highlighting why there is no technological necessity to limit the freedom of terminal equipment in fiber networks.
This talk will also shed light on the Next Generation Internet project as a funding initiative for shaping the future of the internet with Free Software. The audience will learn about the funding opportunities and how Router Freedom has been dealt with by regulators in other countries as well.

"This talk is very close to my heart, quite literally. Many people rely on technology to keep them alive, and that technology runs software. When your life depends on code you can’t see and control, software freedom becomes something very personal."
In this session, Florian Snow shares the story of how he came to care deeply about Free Software, not just as a developer, but as a person directly affected by the limitations of non-free medical systems. What happens when the software behind critical devices can’t be audited, fixed, or even questioned? What does “user control” mean when the user is also the patient and when the consequences of a software bug can be felt in your own body?
We’ll explore the landscape of medical technology: How decisions made by manufacturers and regulators impact real people, how non-free systems can lead to harm or helplessness, and how Free Software principles are at the core of not just transparency, but dignity and autonomy.
This isn’t a technical deep dive, nor a policy lecture. It’s a personal story, a perspective from the inside (sometimes very literally), and a reflection on what it means to live with, and sometimes fight against , the software that runs our most essential systems. Free Software might just belong in places most people never think to look.

FLOSS plays a key role in the preservation --- and development! --- of historical technologies. Yet, as with many other social conquests, FLOSS wasn’t always there: it is an achievement resulting from collective action, practices of imagination and redesign. Before and After (Computer) Freedom guides its visitors to discover the roots of the FLOSS movement: why it was necessary, its first steps, key milestones. By interacting with restored historical computers, visitors will have the chance to explore key moments in the FLOSS movement rediscovering needs, visions and breakthroughs. A machine for time paradoxes and a love letter to FLOSS, the exhibition invites passers-by to a nostalgia trip, and the truly curious to a voyage to a world that could have been... or that still could be.
The exhibition will be available on November 7th and 8th during SFSCON, the South Tyrol Free Software Conference. Find us in the "Hacking Village" at the Crane Hall during all the opening times of SFSCON! The exhibition is curated by Lorenzo Angeli (Uni Trento) and Mirko Marchesin (independent).

With the end of support for Windows 10 (October 2025), many users and businesses are faced with the decision to discard good PCs or migrate to Windows 11, but not all PCs are compatible.
Organized by Marco Crotta and Valentino Spataro, FSFE's volunteers and Linux professionals.
Afterwards, the project Refund4Freedom will be discussed and the organizers will show how a PC with Linux works as well as how to stat using Linux on your PC.

With the end of support for Windows 10 (October 2025), many users and businesses are faced with the decision to discard good PCs or migrate to Windows 11, but not all PCs are compatible.
The introduction will be done by Marta Andreoli of FSFE Free Software Foundation Europe together with Marco Crotta and Valentino Spataro, FSFE's volunteers and Linux professionals
Afterwards, the project Refund4Freedom will be discussed and the organizers will show how a PC with Linux works as well as how to stat using Linux on your PC.

Matthias Kirschner, president of the FSFE will talk about how to get children involved in Free Software. The Free Software Foundation Europe’s volunteers and staff have interacted with over 2000 children between 6 to 10 years in the past months. Children, especially girls, afterwards were motivated to start experimenting with hardware and software. In the discussions we saw that they realise how crucial technology will be for them. Furthermore with the FSFE’s coding competition “Youth Hacking 4 Freedom” we gathered experiences working with teenagers who program, tinker, and have fun with software. Learn more about the experiences how the FSFE sparks children’s and teenagers interest to tinker, experiment and program. Furthermore you will see how fulfilling those activities can be for yourself. Every year tausands of people visit this festival with a lot of tasty vegan street food and shopping opportunities and a very clear focus on sustainability and fun. Since over a decade we added free software information to the mix. And in our experience the people on this event are much more open to the concept of free software than the people we encounter on ordinary information stall on the streets in Vienna.

A panel discussion on software freedom and machine learning will be held, and Gabriel Ku Wei Bin, FSFE Legal Programme Manager, will be among the panellists.

Public Code!”, Device Neutrality, Router Freedom, Free Your Android, assistance with licensing questions, Youth Hacking 4 Freedom, and a tale of software, skateboards, and raspberry ice cream. These are some of the activities by the Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE), which has been working since 2001 to empower users to control technology.
Recently we discussed how the world would look like in our area in 2048, if the FSFE has been successful. In this talk Matthias would like to share those thoughts with you and during the conference get your feedback on the next decades of our work for software freedom.

MP Scrape is a Free Software project developed by the Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE), aimed at leveling the playing field by making it easier for individuals and smaller organizations within the Free Software community to contact their elected officials. By gathering up-to-date and reliable information about Members of Parliament (MPs) across Europe from various sources, MP Scrape helps activists, civil society, and Free Software enthusiasts access accurate and up-to-date contact details for MPs, empowering them to advocate for the causes they care about.

As part of the “Dialog für Cybersicherheit”, the FSFE and the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) are working together with representatives from civil society, academia, industry and public authorities in a project on the CRA and its implication for Free Software. In order to create clarity, information is needed on who will take on which role and which tasks and processes are to be carried out. In particular, the role of Open Source Stewards and Free Software outside the commercial interest are of particular importance to the project.
As part of the project, we invite experts to give talks and share their expertise to shed light on those questions. On Thursday a presentation by Maarten Aertsen (NLnet Labs) will take place, focusing on how Free Source Software is addressed by the Cyber Resilience Act and in particular on how that is different from other New Legislative Framework (NLF) style regulations in different segments. The Chemnitz Linux Days (CLT) are the largest Free Software conference in Germany. It is a long-standing event for education about Linux and Free Software. The event includes workshops, lectures and beginners' talks in the central building of the Chemnitz University of Technology.
The FSFE will be present at the CLT 2025 edition with an information booth and serveral talks and presentations: On Saturday at 12:00, the FSFE's Technical Advisor Florian Snow will talk about "Open system, closed doors: Freedom in Banking" (room V5). At 15:00, Tobias Diekershoff (FSFE System Administrator, Friendica developer) will explore the non-textual areas of the Fediverse (V5). On Sunday at 11:00, Johannes Näder (FSFE Senior Policy Project Manager) will shed a light on openwashing, the practice of misleading consumers and public authorities by disguising proprietary software products as Free Software (V7).
"Ada & Zangemann", the story about the girl Ada who loves to tinker and bravely stands up to the mighty inventor Zangemann, will play a prominent role at this year's CLT: The new animated film will be shown on Saturday and Sunday at 14:00 (W1), and a reading will take place on Saturday at 11:00 (Kinderparadies).

The event will take place at the /Poznan University of Technology/ and is co-organized with /PUT Request/ (the Student Research Circle). The plan is to have a series of 20-minute talks about Free Software projects, followed by some pizza.

On February 6-7, 2025 in Washington, DC, the Knight-Georgetown Institute (KGI) and the Yale Tobin Center’s Digital Economy Project will co-host "DMA and Beyond", a policy and research conference exploring the lessons, challenges, and opportunities of competition regulation and enforcement in digital markets.
Jithendra Palepu, FSFE volunteer, and Lucas Lasota from the Weizenbaum Institute will present a comprehensive study on how Apple's restrictive interoperability policies in the context of the DMA harm Free Software.

FOSDEM '25 - Keynote - How we are defending Software Freedom against Apple at the EU's highest court in Brussels, Belgium

Apple is one of the largest and most powerful companies in the world. Its unbalanced power spans over software and devices, trapping end-users and developers in tight lock-ins. This approach has prevented Free Software to flourish in environments controlled by Apple.
The EU has reacted to Apple's monopolistic practices by passing the Digital Markets Act - a law containing several anti-monopoly obligations against big tech. By designating Apple as a "gatekeeper" of digital markets in the EU, the DMA, the company has now to comply with several rules regarding sideloading, enabling of alternative app stores and interoperability of its operating systems. Apple has put forward an aggressive policy against the DMA. The company started litigation against the Euopean Commission to dodge DMA obligations.
Due to the high risks against software freedom, the FSFE was granted right to intervene in the case. By demonstrating that Apple is being regulated in light of public interest, the FSFE is proving to the court that interoperability and software freedom are compatible with human rights.

The fourth edition of the FSFE's programming competition, Youth Hacking 4 Freedom, is now open for registration!
Youth Hacking 4 Freedom invites European teenagers aged 14 to 18 to showcase their creativity and programming skills. Participants will have the opportunity to bring their project ideas to life, supported by expert mentors from the Free Software community.

Why don't universities run their own Mastodon or Friendica instances in addition to their own email servers - for organisational units, professors and students? Why don't students get a Mastodon handle along with their email address when they enrol? Why don't universities host lecture videos in Fediverse via PeerTube? This is what some people at the Universtiy of Innsbruck asked themselves several months ago. So they made it happened.
At this FSFE Women's Meeting, we are delighted to welcome Melanie Bartos, who led the initiative to establish a Mastodon instance and a Fediverse presence at the University of Innsbruck. Melanie will share her experience in persuading the university's management and IT staff to support the project, as well as the challenges she encountered along the way.
This is a group for women who are interested in Free Software. We get together online once a month to chat, give talks about topics we care about and discuss recent developments.
The group is women-centric and open to all women, inter, trans and non-binary people.

the FSFE's hacking competition for young people from Europe! On top you can win up to €4096 and a trip to Brussels for the award ceremony!
The programming period of this year's YH4F round runs from 1 January to 30 June 2025. Teenagers between 14 and 18 years and living in Europe are welcome to join the competition.
