概要

香港島西部にメインキャンパスを有し、新界にも研究所がある。2018年度の在校生は1万7000人、研究生を入れると2万9000人、教職員数5249人であった。2012年現在の学長︵中国語: 校長︶は張翔教授︵Xiang Zhang︶。名誉総長は行政長官が務め、行政長官が欠けたときは行政長官代行が名誉総長代行を兼ねる。大学の略称は港大、HKU。香港最古の大学であり、大学評価の世界的指標であるクアクアレリ・シモンズ︵QS︶によるQS世界大学ランキング 2023︵QS World University Rankings 2023︶では世界21位^[1]、The Times Higher Education によるTHE世界大学ランキング 2022(World University Rankings 2022)では世界30位に位置し^[^2]、アジアトップクラス、世界屈指の名門大学である。日本の慶應義塾大学と韓国の延世大学校の3大学合同で東アジア研究プログラム︵Three-Campus Comparative East Asian Studies Program︶を行っている。著名な卒業生には、中華民国を成立させた孫文がいる。

沿革

1887年に創立された香港医科大学︵香港西医書院︶を前身とし、1910年当時の香港総督であるフレデリック・ルガードによって総合大学として再編された。 3月16日を創立記念日とする。1911年大学として認可され、1912年に最初の入学式を行った。当時は医学部、工学部、文学部の3学部のみであった。第二次世界大戦中、日本軍の占領下では閉鎖されていた。現在は教育、法律、経営管理・経済、理学系、社会科学系など10の学問分野のファカルティ(学部)を持つ大学に発展している。

中国本土からの留学生

香港は中国返還以来大陸との交流が盛んである。2006年に香港大学を卒業した大陸からの留学生の40%が香港で就職している^[3]。
