The trick is to live somewhere with sane housing prices while working for a Silicon Valley company, for SV pay -- or at least close to it. Yeah, they'll ding you a little for being remote, because they can, so you'll only be making 80% of what you would living in SV... but you'll still be making 3-5X what local companies will pay.
