Simply reading the port with cu(1) should show some data.

As for a PL2303 adapter, this one:

uplcom0: Prolific Technology PL2303 Serial adapter (ATEN/IOGEAR UC232A), rev 
1.10/2.02, addr 2

works fine on larger machines, but failed on at least two notebooks running
Windows as soon it was connected to a serial device (Cisco switch console).
