There's a difference between a cash transaction with a retailer and a credit or debit transaction where the merchant fee is between 0.2%-3.5% depending on debit vs credit, immediate auth vs batched, physical card present, customer signature, etc. But cash transactions do exist.

A penny costs between $0.02-$0.37 depending on the source. Some sources include distribution costs, sorting costs, and transportation costs.

Its truly amazing how quickly you forgot the concept of tax on goods while claiming “and no more need for pennies”. As if the price tag is your final cost.

Taxes on goods are already rounded *to* the penny. In my state, sales tax is 7% -- which isn't perfectly divisible to the penny every time. Just increase the point-of-rounding to the nickel, we're already rounding anyway.
