Mostly the past. I think what's going on in the US, Israel and Australia is a good example of why you don't want your ass chip tied to a single entity you can't change.

If you're coming up with things that hurt the poor or are more racist, homophobic or transphobic than the next most conservative party (in this case, the Democrats), just dispose of them. I am entirely unconcerned with the safety, rights or security of fascist terrorists.

Leave it to the New York Times to come up with the worst possible angle for this. We wouldn't need so many domestic flights if our transportation infrastructure wasn't doubling down on the car fad, when they're too slow for long distance travel and too large for cities and suburbs. Nearly all of us aren't farmers living in BFE.

It's also a necessary term. If we're reliving history, we need to work out how we're going to Marshall Plan ourselves, and criminalizing Republicanism seems like a very obvious starting point.

None of this can happen without eliminating the Republicans and the rest of the far right first.

Still cheaper per user than freeways.

Just ignore the $100 billion thrown down the toilet subsidizing motorists with unnecessarily huge highways and broad boulevards to accomodate an extreme excess of cars, huh?

Is that actually better or just "even more expensive"?
Isn't Tokyo where they have people who cram passengers into subway cars because they're so crowded?
During a rolling stock shortage caused by right-wing austerity not keeping equipment maintained or replacing defective equipment, 30 years ago. That's been alleviated since by actually having trains to run.

Horizontal sprawl makes transit less efficient and drives motor vehicle volume higher. This isn't to say we all need to live in filing cabinets, more housing stock similar to the streetcar suburbs of the 1910s-1940s would go a long way in increasing density. Walkability and livability of a city means the considerations for motorists are limited to the use cases that they're actually good at. Cars are not good at being the default mode of transportation in an urban or suburban environment.

Start bulldozing parking lots and freeways and replacing them with infill development. 51% of your city is just lost space to the movement and storage of private motor vehicles. A more normal number is under half that.

We have a word for conservatives that aren't far-right extremists. They're called Democrats. What we don't have is a party on the left.

However with the MAGA movement - which now stands in for the GOP - cruelty is indeed the point. MAGA wants to hurt everyone who disagrees with it.
No, MAGA's just the Republicans with no mask. Every Republican for the last 50 years has been working for this exact outcome. The ones who say they don't are just upset it was Donald Trump and not them. Cruelty was always the point. Vietnam, Iran-Contra (and the crack epidemic that resulted), the PATRIOT Act, Iraq (both times), Afghanistan, deregulation, shifting the tax base from rich people and corporations to people who work for a living, saying LGBTQ people deserve AIDS, DOMA, refusing to pass the Equal Rights Amendment, opposing healthcare, trying to eliminate Medicare, Medicaid and the VA... NONE of this is new, and the cruelty was the only point.
Republicans are terrorists bent on the destruction of the United States in order to replace it with a white-supremacist ethnostate. All of them deserve a bullet to the brain.

But I feel like this is a recurring theme for followers of Republicanism in the US. You're either a deliberately evil person out to hurt America and everyone in it, or severely mentally ill.
