Attached to: Blue Origin Announces Two-Year Pause in Space Tourism - to Focus on the Moon
FCC deadline requires them to launch 1600 satellites by 31st July 2026 and as of 31st Jan 2026 they have only launched 180 of them. Will they be able to meet this deadline? If not, StarLink will be a global monopoly for quite sometime.
They will ask for an extension (I thought I saw they already did). And, because space is hard, they will most likely receive it (a number of the delays were legitimately outside the control of Amazon's Leo project).

Is it possible the space tourism demand has shrunk? There is probably a limit as to how many rich people want to pay for bragging rights.

For some, a semantic version of 1.x is significant, but it mostly just does not matter for a project like gettext.

I have no idea how the idiots decided to focus on consumer cars that go everywhere.
For some, the long haul and middle mile market is just a subset of the much harder problem (taxis). If they can handle consumer travel (and in some locations, Waymo seems to have mostly solved that problem), they can enter the long haul and middle mile market whenever they see it as a profitable market to enter. Aurora (long haul) and Gatik (middle mile) have an advantage today in those markets because the have focused on just those markets.

Amusingly, one of the firms located on the other side of Evelyn/Central Ave from Gatik's Mountain View office is doing that (long haul), i.e. Aurora. There is a lot of middle mile (warehouse/depot to loading dock) deliveries in the US (go around to the back of your larger grocery store and look at the trucks; some may be semi-sized, but many may be the classic box truck). Middle mile is a bit harder than driving across the country on I-80, but both need to end up pulling into the loading docks at both ends for loading/unloading. And middle mile is an under served market, so, Gatik may be able to be a leader (and profitable).

I read this as 'Zombie Films' and was extremely confused for a little bit.

Attached to: Waymo Robotaxi Hits a Child Near an Elementary School in Santa Monica
In a number of places where Waymo is more ubiquitous, parents are now letting their kids take them to various sports, events, friends houses, etc. using the parents account (technically it is against the regulations in most places for unaccompanied minors to use robotaxis (although Phoenix now allows it)) as the parents believe that it is safer and more reliable than the random Uber/Lyft driver, or having the kids take the local public transportation buses/trams. If parents are willing to trust Waymo with the kids, that probably says something about the perceived safety of the vehicle for at least some adults.

I've only taken one ride, while on vacation in San Francisco
At many major conferences in San Francisco one of the (unofficial) things to do for first time visitors is ride in a Waymo (for the experience?). The number of Waymo's outside the Moscone Center (the major conference facility in San Francisco) can be amusing.

very conservative, defensive driving. surprisingly normal feeling
You mean, completely the opposite of a NYC Taxi driver? To be fair, I have had completely uneventful rides in NYC in taxis, but I really remember those that were a bit more, um, exciting.

But the tech here is so good that its going to destroy all of those uber drivers (assuming it can sort of handle weather -- I can't speak to that)
Some Uber/Lyft drivers are trying to keep Waymo out of their locations precisely because they see what is coming (others just figure they will find some other gig job).
The prices for Waymo are still a bit higher than Uber/Lyft, so the price conscious may continue to use Uber/Lyft for some time, but Waymo can pretty much decide what to charge should they choose to undercut the alternatives (Uber is limited as to how little they can charge, since the drivers need some revenue).
Inclement weather is a challenge for many (including many human drivers). All the major self driving vehicle companies have been doing testing in extremely rainy and snowy locations. Their next gen built-to-purpose Waymo vehicles (Zeekr RT's) reportedly includes heaters and wipers for the various sensors (lidars, radars, cameras). Right now most of the Zeekr's I see are brandishing the "Engineering" marking (so are test mules), but I suspect they are getting close to being able to be hailed (when the manufacturing ramps up).

I've ridden a few times. They tend to be a bit more conservative then some of the other drivers on the streets (no speeding around others, no unannounced lane changes). And, once, I remember someone who decided to cross the street partially hidden behind a truck just as the light turned green (I am sure the phone they were looking at contained important information), and the Waymo saw it (displayed on the screen) long before I would have. I had initially wondered why we weren't moving, then I saw the individual sauntering across the road. I would (will) ride one again when such a need exists.

It was a nice ride but it wasn't allowed to go on the highway so the trip took longer.
Waymo's can now transport passengers using (at least some) highways (I think it is still the case that it is a slow roll out for now, and you need to request access to highway routes, but the approvals tend to come quickly).
Waymo has always tended to roll out new capabilities initially to a small group (in Phoenix, non-employees needed to get "early rider" approval), and expand as they gain additional experience. Waymo has been reportedly doing highway routes for their employees for a while now, and now others can join in.

The basic claim is correct. This article is more in depth and it has a graph with the trends.
The customers in the EU have made it clear what their preferences are, all things being equal, and things are rarely equal. ICE (and various HEV variants) will be the right choice for some for a long long time.

Apple's 30% should be considered and prosecuted as a usary practice.
That said, no is forced to pay it, as no one is being forced to use an Apple device. Those that choose to be part of the problem and pay Apple's taxes should have that option.

Attached to: Kernel Community Drafts a Plan For Replacing Linus Torvalds
Business continuity is a critical part of any serious larger organization, and the board needs to have a plan in the case the leadership has a bus event. While the kernel did have various plans, formalization is just part of the proper process of the board. While some such plans are not public (we never saw Berkshire Hathaway's plans, but Warren Buffet said they existed (although i am going to guess they changed over the years, as Charlie Munger was no longer a viable candidate)), they still must exist.
