Solitary confinement is considered torture by most of the civilized world, and by the Pentagon as well. It was one of the methods used to torture people in Gitmo and the US 'Black Sites', and can cause some serious mental illnesses.

The death penalty as instituted in the Untied States is not an effective deterrent.

A death penalty decision in the US is mostly carried out by old age as the person waits on 'Death Row' for decades of appeals. In all my reading of history I've encountered exactly one civilization which was essentially crime-free, the Inca. The penalty for most crimes was death, carried out quickly and without appeals. They had essentially no prisons because an offender was reviewed and either released or condemned pretty much immediately. They had no thieves, no beggars, no scammers, no rapists, no pederasts, no corrupt officials, no abusive spouses.
Then the Spanish barbarians arrived.

IIRC Harris's prior claim to fame was having more of her convictions reversed than any other prosecutor in her state. Reagan took bribes, fairly openly, including the gift of an entire California ranch given to him by people who had clearly benefited from his Reign of Error. Ford was on the Warren Commission and in charge of fabricating a bio for Lee Oswald Harvey. He and Bush the Not-Stupid were probably both recruited by the CIA in college (U of Michigan was a hot spot of Company recruiting).
Couldn't help noticing that you skipped Carter, probably the only decent human being who ever became president in the last century.

I was originally optimistic about Jassie taking over, he took AWS from "Let's try this, hold my beer" to "We're making so much money that Jeff actually had to pay dividends to shareholders." Afraid I'm not impressed with his leadership of the larger company.
