Hmm, to be fair, if the Internet was just a global network that could be queried for factual information, it would still be insanely useful to have around. I imagine in the future we'll be losing our posting rights on centralized "social media" when the government eventually kills s230. Most platforms won't be able to handle the liability or have the sophistication to filter "illegal stuff" out.

I see solar as the only way to basically fix your energy price for a period of time. Unless the politicians get off their collect rumps, data center expansion and ev expansion are going to continue to drive high demand for electricity, which will push the price up for the citizenry.
I'd recommend anyone that has the ability to get solar to do so. It's a worth while investment. If you have spare yard space with no obstructions of most the sky, you can install this stuff on racks a few feet off the ground and not punch holes in your roof. DIY solar is pretty darn straight forward, especially if you don't put the panels on the roof.
I feel really sorry for anyone renting that's at the mercy of both their landlord and the utility companies, as neither cares how expensive life is for you.

Depending on where you live, it's very likely already illegal to disconnect from the main grid, even if you have battery+solar. The more rural, the more likely you'll be able to go off-grid but if you are in a major city, most (at least in California) will insist you be on the grid.
With that in mind, you can still add a battery+solar without an inter-tie agreement and just not sell back to the grid. This will offset your usage and you'll just have to pay the flat rate connection charge and the various fees and government mandates. Yes, that's frustrating but it will probably still have you coming out ahead of the game in the long run.

If you get a lot of wind, you may consider exploring what small wind turbines can do for you. It might be an affordable way to diversify your energy generation. Just a thought.

Most modern cars a very likely already sending all sorts of telemetry about your car's driving habits. I would be more surprised if there is a car manufacturer that isn't doing this, minus maybe Slate, which I don't think we can even buy yet.

It would be great if Mountain Home's Walmart had a fast charge option(does it?). I bet once the casino goes in, that place will definitely have charging available. MH makes a good stopping spot between Boise and Twin Falls, so it would be a good spot for chargers so people felt less range anxious, given the distances at play here.
P.S. Just looked it up, and Electrify America is actually available there now.
As you say though, a lot of Idahoans will treat an EV as a political statement. EV range in winter usually also takes a non-trivial hit if the temperatures stay cold for long enough. To be fair, ICEV also lose efficiency when it's cold outside, but there are gas stations everywhere, so no range fear. We definitely need more fast chargers but it is happening, even now.

Depends how many hours that 10k a month job requires. Then I'd do then 10k for as long as a possible could tolerate it, while banking as much as possible. Then I take the UBI once I've hopefully set myself up.
So 70 hour work week $10k or $800 for zero hours of work really depends on what you already have.

Civilization? Nah. Individual countries? That's much more probable.
I'm not saying we don't set ourselves back in technology or possibly even lock ourselves into a specific technological era, but even if we all got forced back 500 years in technology, civilization would still be a thing.
We're not wiping ourselves out like the asteroid that took out the dinosaurs.

Yes, we literally are the world police and that cost money. Protecting Europe cost money. Supporting our allies in Asia and Australia cost money.
Are you suggesting we just close up shop around the world, pulling back all our military resources, shrinking our military to a defensive stature only? It would most certainly save us a lot of money. I do wonder the global ramifications of such a move though. Our military does provide stability in many places and if we just left, a power vacuum would develop and then get filled, perhaps not by the local government(s).
Maybe China takes over world police instead.
Don't take this post as a good or bad outlook, just that if we do in fact reduce military spending by any real amount, it will have repercussions around the globe.

I love the idea but something tells me the ruling class will just have the masses murdered, possibly by AI drones, instead of just providing for us.

UBI is fundamentally incompatible with capitalism in that if everyone gets $2000 a month, just like inflation, the markets will raise to eat up all that money laying on the table.
To avoid this would require price fixing on at least rent but very likely other things as well. Maybe peg the value of the dollar to the inflation index, but at the end of the day, we'll have to decide how many units of work each person gets by virtue of existing and how many goods and services those units of work exchange for. This will have to be balanced with the reality that we have limited natural resources.
Also, how do you get around the problem of UBI either being all you need to be happy and still incentivizing people to gain education and do high level jobs that still require really smart, motivated people?
Sure, some of us will just want to seek out knowledge for the sake of knowledge. If money wasn't important, I'd of spent all my educational years focusing on history and archaeology. In retrospect, I should of done that anyway since I'm not using the education I invested in, though I did enjoy learning about the technology (I have a silly AS in comp networking along with an a+, network+ and security+, but can't find work worth taking over my grocery store job, go figure).
I'd love to find a way forward that gives people the choice to be unproductive (or maybe 20 hours community service in exchange?) or strive to educate and do really fascinating stuff, I'm just afraid most would rather just drink, smoke, fuck and play video games. Shrugs.

Gas turbines probably use fewer acres of land then the equivalent solar farm would and they work 24/7. Not saying solar+wind+batteries isn't a better idea but it's not hard to see why someone might setup a gas power plant instead. Depends how the laws and their personal feels about climate change come into play.

Maybe he meant all the hot air that comes out of our government, making us a world leader in natural gas.

If we have no free will, then why do we punish people for their "choices" when it's impossible to have made that choice due to a lack of free will? Seems strange to me. So clearly, we must have free will.
If we have no free will, then "God" is one sadistic fuck that just does stuff to us. Like childhood cancer! Thanks for the suffering for nothing. If we have no free will, then all your bad choices were really just "God" fucking with you.
Yeah, all around, not going with that. I'll stick to my atheistic outlook and accept that I do in fact have free will and self determination (which requires free will).

We basically have two choices here. We either back the copyright folks and punish AI for theft. If we do this, we hand China the AI race because China will ignore copyright laws and whatcha gonna do about it? Right, nothing.
The other choice is we rule that AI "consuming" any content is perfectly acceptable and we position ourselves for the best chance to win the AI race.
Honestly, either way works for me. Copyright has been extended repeatedly over the years to an absurd length. I'd love to see that change.
