Reviewing the moderation my posts receive, I see that many of them get both insightful/interesting and troll votes. Often the positive mods outweigh the negative, but not always.
This demonstrates that the current moderation system is somewhat broken for controversial posts. People who disagree with me mod my words "troll" and "flamebait", while fairer moderators who are interested in having an informed and varied debate consider them worthy of consideration. Obviously not everything I post is gold, but this insightful/troll mod dichotomy happens every single day.
To fix this, I suggest making any +1 mod not only count for +1, but also cancel out a single -1. That way positive mods are still only worth +1, but when a post is controversial they cancel out negative mods at twice the normal rate. That will foster more open and varied debate, and prevent troll moderators with an agenda from systematically attacking views they disagree with.

The system as it stands works. I've had tons of posts modded troll - and some of those were even deserved :-) Not a big deal. It's just points on the internet. I'm always at the karma cap anyway, and it's not like I avoid controversy. Most people probably follow the advice of concentrating more on good posts. ACs already post at -1, and they're the bulk of the "professional trolls" - people whose sole purpose in life seems to be hanging around the internet feeding the rage machine.

Before they broke it, this problem was addressed by metamoderation where folks were asked to read the comment in context and vote whether a particular moderation was fair.

Insightful, Interesting, and Informative are essentially the same as they tend to get used, as are Troll and Flamebait. They can be reduced to a single modifier for each group.
Both Overrated and Underrated need to get ditched, too, since they tell you nothing about the post content. That's a bit more involved to fix - perhaps moderators need to choose a preferred score on a scale of 0 to 5, and then the post score would be an average of moderator scoring, rather than cumulative.

I think a good way to tackle the problem would be to temporarily remove mod point privileges from moderators who have given 'troll' or 'flamebait' votes to comments that have a strong amount of 'insightful' or 'interesting' votes. I'm sure the moderation system can be easily modified to check for that and automatically take that action. The moderator who's been affected negatively should
