  • Helie Lee is a Korean-American writer who wrote the best-selling book Still Life with Rice (1996), which is a story of her grandmother who escaped from North Korea during the Korean War in the 1950s. Her grandmother had lost track of her oldest son. After writing her first book, Helie Lee made a dangerous rescue mission to North Korea in 1997 with hopes of reuniting her grandmother and her uncle, who had been separated for more than forty years,. Her second book In the Absence of Sun: A Korean Woman's Promise to Reunite Three Lost Generations of Her Family (2002) is about her rescue mission.
