The real issue is not the cost, it is the paperwork. Instead of sailing through customs, even item under $800 will now generate a sheaf of paperwork. It may even require someone to physically visit the custom office in question and sign for the individual item. Given that customs is as understaffed as most of the working parts of the US government and Trump and Musk are determined to get rid of the staff that exists, the chances of minor items ever seeing the light of day seem remote.

And the cost of the paperwork. I'm feeling the effects of Brexit on importing something that was only available in the UK to Spain: I got a customs bill yesterday for 1.51 EUR in duty and 31.25 EUR in admin fees for stopping the package and charging me the duty.

... and that's also because the EU abolished its own de minimis exemption for VAT... previously such a low value shipment would have "sailed through".

The rest of the world abolished this exception and is doing just fine. The only problem with the customs office right now is the usual Trump bullshit of shooting from the hip. When they got rid of such exceptions in my country they did it with 1 years notice, and packages seem to arrive just as fast as they did in the past, though they do cost a bit more.
But hey if that means one brain damaged moron less spends $5 on a wear once item of disposable rubbish tier clothing then I'm all for it. Maybe products fr

For Europe, AliExpress charges sales tax at the checkout and pays it to the destination country. So no paperwork, sails through customs. Typically stuff arrives about a week after you order it.
If the US wants the same thing then all they need to do is ask. No need for this nonsense.

They DO do the same thing for the US! The US has just been allowing these small purchases to come through without duties, because anything else would be abusive to citizens as there are no domestic sources for these goods. I have packages on the way from aliexpress which I bought before Trump took this action, and I'm now being penalized for making those purchases. Everything I bought is not available from a US manufacturer, and even if it was, every single part of each product would have been produced in C

And after the change you will still be able to buy these things
The change ALREADY HAPPENED (did you RTFA? apparently not, but trucks containing packages from China are ALREADY being turned away at the border) and I have items in transit NOW which have NOT YET LEFT CHINA which were sent BEFORE THIS ACTION WAS TAKEN. Trump is therefore blocking my receipt of packages I already ordered BEFORE THIS CHANGE.
A retailer will import a forty-foot shipping container full of them, pay the duties, and then sell them individually.
And then I will have to pay MULTIPLES OF THE PRICE.
And it might motivate somebody to start making those products here in the US.
It will be LITERALLY YEARS before anyone can start making these products here. We SHUT DOWN the facilities that could d

As far as your items in transit or ordered but not shipped, presumably you will get a refund. And you can order again under the new rules and price.
Do I get a refund from the federal government that interfered with the purchases I ALREADY MADE UNDER THE EXISTING RULES for the additional costs? If this change were to be made at all, then it should have only applied to packages sent after the change. Anything else is abusive to The People and here you are defending it, cuck.

You're making excuses for shit behavior (which BTW has already been rescinded, there was so much pushback from people with spines) and you want to accuse meof not wanting to engage in "substantive discussion"? Eat all the dicks.

Yes! They absolutely are doing this now.

It will generate electronic messages and spot checks, eventually. No extra paper or human involved for a package, unless some seller is scamming and gets caught in the spot check.
Eventually can take a while.

Imagine if this is just a ploy to say "the USPS is inefficient and can't follow simple rules.. let's abolish it and privatize". It's either that or Trump is making a bunch of imperial decrees that he has no clue how to enforce. I'm torn.

Somehow in Europe they collect VAT taxes without a ton of paperwork.
