日本伝統の遊びとして世界的に知られている﹁折り紙﹂は平面を立体に変換するというコンセプトが数学や物理学でも注目を集め、ロケットやエアバッグに応用されるといったことも。そんな折り紙をPCのウェブブラウザでシミュレートできて、構造や折り方を考えるために役立ちそうな無料のウェブアプリ﹁Origami Simulator﹂がAmanda Ghassaeiさんによって公開されています。 Origami Simulator http://apps.amandaghassaei.com/OrigamiSimulator/ Origami Simulatorにアクセスするとこんな感じ。中央に折り紙の3Dモデルが表示されます。Origami Simulatorでは、折り紙の折り方を順番に表示するのではなく、紙に刻まれた山折り線・谷折り線全てを一度に折り畳むとどうなるかを示してくれます。モデルはドラッグすると

さきほど2013年ノーベル化学賞が発表され、 Martin Karplus, Michael Levitt, Arieh Warshel の3人が﹁for the development of multiscale models for complex chemical systems (複雑な化学系のマルチスケールモデルの開発に対して)﹂の仕事で受賞しました。 受賞した3人とも分子動力学シミュレーションで世界的に使われているプログラムパッケージ﹁CHARMM﹂の開発に携わっています。︵私はCHARMMは使ったことが無く、あまり詳しくはないのですが︶ ちなみにCHARMMと双璧をなすもう一つの有名なプログラムパッケージ﹁AMBER﹂の開発者である Peter Kollman は既に亡くなられており、もしご存命でしたら今回受賞されていたかもしれません。 マルチスケール︵多階層︶モデルのシミュ
