History

edit

The Indian Government proposed a metro rail system for 16 tier-2 cities in India including Coimbatore in 2010. While the Government of Tamilnadu in 2011, shelved this proposal in favour of a monorail, the Coimbatore Railway Struggle Committee has also protested to implement a metro system in Coimbatore.[1][2] In 2013, E. Sreedharan did a survey of Coimbatore and that announced metro rail was suitable transport for Coimbatore.[3] In January 2017, a Coimbatore District Administration official told The Hindu that there was no mass rapid system presently under consideration for Coimbatore.[4] The state government again reinstated the proposal in Coimbatore in 2017. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has announced[when?] that the national government is ready to implement and fund the project, following approval from the state government.[when?] The work for the project was expected to begin by the financial year 2017/18,[5] but it hadn't.[needs update] CM Edipaddi K. Palaniswami has also announced[when?] a metro rail plan for Coimbatore. He also announced that the feasibility study will be conducted and Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) and the funds will be provided by German-based KFW company.[6][7][8][9][10] CMRL released a tender notice for preparing the project's DPR and feasibility report.[when?][11]
