The flag of Libya from 1977 to 2011 was a green field in 1:2 ratio. It was adopted as the flag of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya in November 1977 and designed by its then-leader Muammar Gaddafi, intended to symbolise his "Green Revolution". It was considered the only solid colour national flag in the world during this time.[1][2]

In 2011, after the collapse of Gaddafi's government, the 1951–1969 flag from the Kingdom of Libya was re-adopted, although the Jamahiriya flag remained in use by Gaddafi loyalists.[3][4] Before 1977, the country (known as the Libyan Arab Republic) used an Arab liberation flag design similar to Egypt's, although this was relinquished following the Egyptian–Libyan War.[1]
