What is a portal?

edit

Aportal on Wikipedia is a doorway to knowledge. Portals are similar to Wikipedia's Main page, but each one is focused on the subject area indicated in its own title. In addition to some of the features the Main page has, portals have various other features, including automated ones to keep their content continually in sync with the encyclopedia itself, updated directly from its articles.

Each portal provides sample content from articles within its scope, to help readers survey the subject. Each one also presents lists of links to aid in navigating its subject's content on Wikipedia and beyond.

New design features available for use in portals include slideshows for both images and article excerpts, panoramic banners, and more. Excerpts are pulled from articles at the time a portal is viewed, so that the latest version of each is always displayed.

Portals are currently evolving, being under continuous design development at the Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals. Please feel free to join and become a participant.

missing notes list

edit

I see a "Cite error: There are <ref group=note> tags on this page, but the references will not show without a {{reflist|group=note}} template (see the help page)." message on the page right now (see screenshot -- scroll to bottom). I'd rather not see this message, but I feel like adding a notes section is not relevant all the time, as it depends on the content currently visible in the portal.

Any ideas? Or suggestions where else I should start this discussion? = paul2520 (talk) 16:50, 15 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Ah, per Wikipedia talk:Portal/Guidelines/Archive 7#References in portals, this has been noted in the past and it seems <noinclude> tags are a potential fix. I can't seem to find the note in question, though! = paul2520 (talk) 16:57, 15 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Paul2520, Dcljr, and Auric: Module:Excerpt removes known footnote templates from excerpts. {{NoteTag}} was listed for removal but Integer uses its alias {{Notetag}}. I've added the alias, so this transclusion and any similar cases will now appear cleanly. Editors making technical changes don't watch every portal, but WT:WikiProject Portals/Design#Discussions about technical issues is a good place to report problems for faster attention. This is great news. I wasn't sure where to ask and didn't want to draw negative attention to the portal.--Auric talk 11:57, 5 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
