Common but inaccurate

edit

It is common but inaccurate to say things like "of the H5N1 strain of avian flu". Avian flu is a disease. H5N1 is a subtype of the species called Influenza A virus. The causitive agent of the 2007 Bernard Matthews H5N1 outbreak (as well as all the current outbreaks of H5N1 that are of concern) was a specific strain called "Asian lineage HPAI A(H5N1)" short for Asian lineage (ie evolved from a prior strain in Asia) Highly Pathogenic (ie deadly) Avian Influenza (ie bird flu) Influenza A virus of the subtype with hemagglutinin type 5 and neuraminidase type 1. This strain has three existing subclades (see H5N1 for details). Which subclade this outbreak was from, I don't know (but see Fujian flu). WAS 4.250 16:55, 10 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thank you. I have amended the lead para - if it is still not quite right please feel free to fix it Bridgeplayer 17:36, 10 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

good article

edit

this is well written and corresponds with the good article criteria Themcman1 15:46, 10 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

This article is certainly one of the most well written articles in the Influenza/H5N1 series. I'd still be hesitant to nominate it for GA status, it has some internal inconistencies, alarmist tone, journalistic voice and very very very minor citation issues (I'm expecting them to disappear in a few days).
  • Can we get any photos of the plant. Who lives near Suffolk?

I've corrected the terminology used, previous version related to chickens, not Turkeys - e.g. chicks to poults, cocks to stags. ChrisaC1972 (talk) 19:48, 6 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

criticism

edit

I am shocked and surprised that Bernard Mathews is getting compensated for incomptence that almost sparked a nationwide bird flu epidemic in the UK. But that is POV and should not be in the article. 217.7.209.108 12:12, 13 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Don't be shocked that individuals and organizations with a lot of money are competent at aquiring money. WAS 4.250 21:55, 13 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
