As is not coming from Aes. The genitive of aesisaeris, absolutly different from that one of as that was assis, so the two words have an absolutly dfferent etymology. The better hypotesis I've found is from greek (ancient of course) εις (eis, also εις in doric dialect and ας in tarentine one, being Tarentum a doric colony) in the meaning of "one", "whole". An as was the "entire" weight of a "libra" (a pound) made from twelve unciæ. (From "libra" come the french "livre" and the italian "lira".)
