Greg, you can't make a blanket statement like, He is known as the premier photographer of the Monterey Peninsula during the late 19th-century.
when only one person wrote that. Instead you could say, "(Author's name) wrote that he was ....." or "He was described in the magazine of the Calif. Hist. Society as the ......." Understand the difference between what is currently in the lead, and a more neutral, encyclopedic way of stating something which does not does not give the claim undue weight.
