Some time ago I cleaned up the Fold mountain article, removing references to the Alps and Himalayas as fold mountains, because the term is no longer used for them in Geology. Most of the topography of the these two mountain belts is due to thrusting, with or without lithospheric delamination and a side helping of isostasy. The folding is minor and only the small mountain ranges in the forelands of these belts, such as the Jura (the Alps) and the Sulaiman (Himalayas) fold belts, are created mainly by folding and even that is related to thrusting. It proved very difficult to find many references in Google scholar or Google books to 'fold mountains' in the sense of the Alps/Himalayas, in modern (post 1980ish) literature outside a few physical geography texts. I'll give some thought to a summary section for this article, but the original is short enough. You've convinced me that a separate article is good idea and I hope to have time to go through this soon and make some suggestions for improvement, sorry if this comes over as rather negative. Mountain building → Mountain formation — as per discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject_Geology#Mountain_formation--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 00:03, 5 February 2010 (UTC)
The reason is the page already exists as a redirect to this, and another editor already tried a copy & paste move over it, i.e. into the redirect. At this point having an admin do it cleanly is probably best.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 00:09, 5 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
