In the years before widespread news media, prayer meetings were also used to share news and information

Where? The historical and cultural context is not clear. Is this an American Protestant thing? Ming the Merciless 17:04, 25 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. This seems to be specific only to American Protestant denominations. Perhaps there are related activities in other religions that are called something other than prayer meeting or its equivalent translation. Maybe the article could be expanded? B Hastings (talk) 19:37, 1 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Reread the article. Before there was widespread media, news was often delivered at prayer meetings (which could be held at ANY church, in any country, and were), particularly if it concerned recent crises or events, such as the one which prompted the meeting in the first place. Many movies, novels, etc. about historical events or periods include mentions of such meetings; too many to list examples. Zephyrad 10:13, 26 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Restructuring and expansion

edit

I made a start on restructuring and expanding the article. In addition to appropriate citations, I recommend a History section and a section each for prayer meetings specific to Christianity, Islam, and the charismatic sects ("cults") which also use them. (I do not think the other major world religions have prayer meetings, as such.) - Tenebris 18:29, 2 May 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.112.29.129 (talk)

Use of "clergy"

edit

Prayer meetings are not always initiated by the "clergy". Some religious groups don't even refer to their full-time staff as clergy, that sounds like a very Catholic category. I'm trying an edit here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Svyerkgeniiy (talkcontribs) 00:59, 3 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Notability

edit

Is this worth having an article for? Would you have an article on "football game", or just "football"? Perhaps this is because "prayer meeting" is not a term that the groups I am a part of uses. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Svyerkgeniiy (talkcontribs) 01:04, 3 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

I agree. Should be merged into prayer. Cosprings (talk) 13:12, 3 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
