The entry for this Steen Andersen Bille in the Danish Encyclopedia of Biograpphy (Dansk biografisk Lexicon - as quoted in the references to the article) includes the following: (translated from the Danish) Upon leaving the French service in 1825 he was decorated with the Order "pour le merite militaire".
Editor Catlemuir has just edited this out, as the order appears to be Prussian! (and Wikipedia agrees with him!). As Bille obviously received some Order of Merit from the French, what do our fellow editors with a bit more knowledge of French and French Orders translate his "pour le merite militaire" as?
