This edit in May 2006 added the bit about SSN-695 appearing in the film. Checking the DVD, there are no numbers visible. Additionally, the film does not thank individual ships, but instead thanks several US Pacific Fleet commanders and Submarine Group Five. These are all west coast units, Birmingham was not a west coast ship. (edit, I stand corrected on this item as Birmingham was stationed in Pearl Harbor in 1991.[1]) USS Gary was the stand in for the FFG in the film and can be seen in one of the shots while the submarine is doing an emergency surface. Garys command history report from 10 July 1989 states they were underway for the filming, off southern California having departed from Long Beach.[2] USS Salt Lake City had VIP's on board relating to the film in March 1989, though that SLC was not in the area during filming in July 1989.[3][4][5] Either way, the submarine in the film could not have been Birmingham. I believe this resulted in confusion with published photo linked with this text. Unfortunately this error has been in wikipedia for so many years that there are a few sources that took that and reprinted it as if it were true. The real submarine was likely in COMSUBGRU 5, and in the vicinity og Long Beach in July 1989. --Dual Freq (talk) 21:39, 14 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
