The opening paragraph opines negatively on the supposed scorched earth strategy General Sherman employed against the confederate states in open rebellion against the union. It should be rewritten without this pro-confederate bias. For example: “General Sherman used tactics that, while extreme, were permissible under the law of war as it was read at the time. While controversial, his strategies were critical in ensuring a Confederate surrender, reunification of the Union, and a lasting peace.” 100.16.234.26 (talk) 09:13, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

The sentence: “According to historian John D. Winters's The Civil War in Louisiana (1963), at this stage Sherman…” should be updated to: “According to historian John D. Page number error in cite note #237

edit

The citation states that, in addition to the book cited, the quote can also be found on page 262 of volume 17 of "Papers of Ulysses S. Grant". I have checked the source, which can be accessed for free here, and have tracked the quotation in question down to page 162 (going by the printed-in page numbers). I believe this is a simple typo and should be edited to read "162" instead of "262".

In case the page citation numbers should change, I am referring to section that says: 'In 1867, he wrote to Grant that "we are not going to let a few thieving, ragged Indians check and stop the progress" of the railroads.' L. Ron Musk (talk) 02:54, 27 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
