I am an assistant professor of Anthropology at Cal Poly Pomona, helping my students improve Wikipedia!
Together, we bring scholarly knowledge about archaeology, heritage, and cultural resource management to wikipedia -- to benefit everyone!
Wikipedia acknowledges systemic bias in its platform. Editors are largely white and male, leaving the insights and skills of Black, Indigenous, Asian, female, and queer editors out. This systemic bias in who edits wikipedia means that the content is also biased towards people and issues that matter the most to white men.[1]
In the classes where we edit wikipedia, we highlight topics and scholars that add complexity and visibility to this issue. See some examples below!
Students edited Wikipedia pages related to California Archaeology to update them with knowledge from more up-to-date and diverse bodies of scholarship. Some students focused on specific Native Californian nations and cultural groups. They also edit pages about general topics, using examples from California archaeology, heritage, and history to increase the representation of Californians of all ethnicities and genders.
