Wikipedia is more than just an encyclopedia - it is also a community. People from all over the world come together to write, edit and improve articles. One thing people need is appreciation. Appreciation is a basic human need.[1] Therefore, it is important to thank each other (regularly) for the work each does in building the encyclopedia. A thank you never hurts.

Why thank someone?

edit

Thanking a Wikipedia contributor for his or her work has many benefits. Below is a list of what positive effects thanks and compliments can have on Wikipedia contributors:

  1. Increases the person's self-confidence.
  2. Strengthens the connection between you and the other person.
  3. Creates an atmosphere of appreciation and kindness.
  4. Encourages others to be kind and helpful as well.
  5. Can have a positive impact on the mood of both persons.
  6. Gives a sense of recognition and respect.
  7. May lead to a greater willingness to help again in the future.
  8. May induce a feeling of satisfaction and happiness in the giver.
  9. Contributes to a positive and supportive community.
  10. Can brighten the overall atmosphere and make it more positive.

These positive effects will be quite underestimated by some.
