This proposal is for a standard naming convention for transit, transport, and train stations in the Republic of Ireland. Stations in Northern Ireland are covered by similar guidelines at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (UK stations). The convention is related to naming conventions for stations in other countries, including Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Canadian stations) Wikipedia:Naming conventions (stations in Poland), Wikipedia:Naming conventions (UK stations), and Wikipedia:Naming conventions (US stations).
The guideline is intended to bring Irish stations into a standard format that reflects common use in Ireland and local communities.
Generally, Irish stations should take the form "[NAME] railway station" for heavy rail, or simply "[NAME] station" for other types of rail transport (i.e. Dublin's Luas light rail system), or if the station serves multiple modes of transport. Generally, "railway station" or "station" should be lower case per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (capitalization).
In cases where stations have ambiguous names, disambiguate them according to the disambiguation policy and guideline. If the station is the primary topic of the name, it should stay at the base name, with a hatnote for other uses or a dab page. For ambiguous stations that are not the primary topic, add a distinguishing term using standard parenthetical disambiguation: Xxx railway station (Location). The term in parentheses should follow this guide:
A disambiguation page should list all the ambiguous stations. "Xxx railway station" (or "Xxx station") should point to the disambiguation page, unless one is the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. For example:
