The following is a list of characters who first appeared or are due to appear in the BBC soap opera EastEnders in 2012, by order of first appearance. Until April, characters are introduced by the series' executive producer, Bryan Kirkwood. Thereafter, they are introduced by his successor, Lorraine Newman. The first main character to be announced was Ray Dixon, the father of Morgan Jackson-King.

In-universe information
OccupationFuneral director

Leslie "Les" Coker, played by Roger Sloman, appears on 9 January as a funeral director who visits Carol Jackson (Lindsey Coulson) and David Wicks (Michael French) to arrange Pat Evans' (Pam St. Clement) funeral. He tells them he used to know Pat when he was an apprentice, implying he was her client when she was a prostitute, and offers a discount on the funeral. He says that he arranged funerals for many of the other local residents, including David's father Pete Beale, Ethel Skinner and Archie Mitchell.[1]

TV columnist for The Sun, Ally Ross, called Sloman's cameo appearance in the show "TV gold".[2] Of Pat and Les, Kate White of Inside Soap said "Pat had, erm, 'relations' with Mr Coker the undertaker. What a forward-thinking way to get a discount on your funeral."[3] The Daily Mirror's Jane Simon commented on Les's scenes, saying "You don't often get laughs out of an undertaker, but the chap who turns up to arrange Pat's funeral has Carol Jackson spluttering into her tea."[4]

ClassificationPresent; regular

OccupationPub chef
Barman (2012—)

Ray Dixon,[5] played by Chucky Venn, is an ex-partner of Bianca Butcher (Patsy Palmer) and the father of her son Morgan Butcher (Devon Higgs). He made his first on screen appearance on 10 January 2012.[6]

Ray is first mentioned in the episode broadcast on 9 January 2012, when Morgan asks about his father and Bianca says it is Barack Obama. Bianca's adopted daughter, Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty), knowing the truth, attempts to contact Ray.[1] Whitney takes Morgan to meet Ray the next day,[6] and he soon comes to Walford to see Morgan. He saves Kim Fox (Tameka Empson) from a falling ladder, and she is attracted to him. Bianca soon realises that Whitney has taken Morgan to meet Ray, but does not want them to see each other, and Kim is disappointed to learn that Ray has a son. Whitney soon convinces Bianca to let Morgan see Ray again.[7] Ray returns shortly after, wanting to spend more time with his son and offering to cook a meal for Bianca's family, although when Ray reveals he has a daughter, Sasha Dixon (Rebecca Sanneh), Bianca throws him out. He successfully gets a job as a barman and chef at The Queen Victoria public house.[8] On his first day, Sasha arrives, and Kim, who is looking after Morgan, brings him to the pub, where he meets Sasha and spends time with her and Kim. Ray asks Kim out, but Bianca arrives and is angry so takes Morgan out, and Kim tells Ray she has had enough of men with "baggage".[9] Ray continues to pursue Kim but she insists she is busy. She has a date with Sinclair (Colin Michael Carmichael), during which Ray calls her easy, and she slaps him.[10] After seeing Bianca beg for her old job back, Ray talks to her about how he wishes he could have been there for Morgan and how he changed his priorities for Sasha. Bianca misreads his kindness and goes to kiss him, but he turns away.[11] When Ray discovers that Bianca is struggling with money, he gives her £300, saying it is for back-payments for Morgan.[12] He starts to get somewhere with Kim but she suddenly leaves. He later hears from Kim's sister Denise Fox (Diane Parish) that Kim has caught head lice, so he gives Kim a hat to wear and they finally kiss.[13] Kim dislikes it when she sees Ray and Roxy Mitchell (Rita Simons) playfight in the kitchen.[14] She also becomes jealous when she overhears him flirting with Bianca whilst helping in the kitchen. As a result, she accidentally slices off the top of Ray's finger when he tries to help her fillet some fish. She accompanies him to the hospital where they open up to one another and decide to start a relationship.[15]

Development

Venn heard that EastEnders were looking to cast Ray, so contacted his agent to be put forward for the part. His agent told him that the producers were already interested in him for the part. Venn had previously worked with actor Jamie Foreman, who plays Derek Branning in the series, and when he discovered that Foreman was a part of the show, it made him more determined to get the part of Ray. Venn was eventually cast in the series, and was contracted for six months.[16] Venn started filming in November 2011.[17] The character and casting were then announced on 15 November 2011.[18] Venn was a fan of EastEnders since he was about 12 years old, so he felt it was "a real privilege to now be a part of television history."[16] He said of his casting, "I have had the pleasure of working on many great productions with fantastic artistes such as Morgan Freeman and I have to say working on EastEnders feels like it is up there with the best of them. EastEnders is etched in British history and it is an honour and a pleasure to be part of it."[19]

Ray is a former army soldier, which Venn said taught him "discipline and how to handle himself in certain situations."[20] Venn has described him as "a noble fella"[16] and "a man of principles [who] wants to honour his parental duties to the end, no matter what."[20] Ray is described as "a good guy" who enjoys the gym, the pub and watching football matches. He had a hard childhood, but was loved by his mother and grandparents. From his grandmother he gained a love of Caribbean food and from his grandfather he took "a special kind of optimism". He got a girl from his estate pregnant before joining the army, which resulted in the birth of his daughter Sasha. Ray sees Sasha as "being the best thing in his life, but he wishes her mother didn't exist."[21] Ray works as a pub chef, which he has done in various cities. He has no problems with women but is described as "a love 'em and leave 'em type."[21]

Ray and Bianca had a relationship when she was living in Manchester, and he fell in love with her but it ended when she met Tony King[21] and stole money from Ray.[22] Bianca never told Ray that she had become pregnant by him.[16] A source from EastEnders confirmed: "Ray hasn't seen Bianca for years and they didn't part on good terms. He meets Whitney as he has matters with Bianca that are unresolved. But Ray gets the shock of his life when Whitney tells him all about Morgan—and she soon realises that Ray knew nothing about his son."[18] Ray's introduction to EastEnders was said to fill "another piece of the puzzle" of Bianca's life, as previously nothing about Morgan's paternity was known.[16] The relationship between Ray and Bianca was described as "fraught".[16]

Venn told All About Soap that when Ray meets Morgan for the first time, he has mixed emotions because although he has met his son, Morgan does not know who he is, and thinks he is meeting Barack Obama. Venn opined that it would be "cathartic" for Ray, saying he would be sad as he has missed out on seven years of Morgan's life, and said hat when they first meet, "it's a lovely moment [for] the two of them".[23]AnEastEnders insider explained that Ray is desperate to be a part of Morgan's life, and would do whatever it takes to be with him, even move to Albert Square, where Morgan's family are.[24] Venn opined that Ray would strive to be a good father, saying "[he]'d take his parental responsibilities very seriously".[20]

Discussing the storyline in which Ray asks Kim out on a date but she plays hard to get, an EastEnders insider told the Daily Star Sunday that "Kim absolutely fancies the pants off Ray but she's got to calm herself down. She wants to get this one right so she decides the best way is to play hard to get. Ray sees straight through her and rather enjoys winding her up. She's a little firecracker as far as he's concerned and he likes it. These two are going to provide quite a bit of comedy as they get to know each other. Kim believes it's her destiny to have a fit man on her arm and she may well have met her match in Ray. It's going to be a fun few weeks for her and everyone is excited at the prospect of these two becoming a couple. They have real on-screen chemistry."[25]

Kim plays hard to get with Ray for a number of weeks, until Ray admits his feelings for her in scenes broadcast in April 2012. Up until then, they argue a lot, which a writer for All About Soap insisted was sexual tension.[26]AnEastEnders insider told Inside Soap, "Pairing up Kim and Ray initially creates fireworks of entirely the wrong kind! But there's definitely something there, and [their colleagues] can see plain as day that they're meant to be together."[27] In the storyline, Kim starts working at The Queen Victoria where Ray is a cook. At one point, she insists that she does not want Ray, she just wants him to want her. She is angry about being asked to filet a bucket of fish, so when she overhears Ray flirting with Bianca, she becomes more annoyed, and when Ray offers to help, Kim accidentally slices the end of Ray's finger off. They go to the hospital together, and then Ray tells Kim that he has romantic feelings for her.[27]

A writer for All About Soap magazine described Ray as "hunky", "good-looking" and said that "this mysterious man might have everything going for him."[28] Laura Morgan of All About Soap said that Ray's inclusion "ticks the hunky-man box very nicely".[29]

Gethin Williams,[30] played by Bradley Freegard,[31] appears on 17 and 27 January.[31][32] He is Jane Beale's (Laurie Brett) former haute cuisine tutor, who attends a fundraising event organised by Jane after hearing about it on local radio. Impressed with her catering for the function, he asks her to interview for a job at his new restaurant. Jane does not want to take the job but, when Gethin rings the next day, her friend Tanya Jessop (Jo Joyner) arranges for them to meet up. Jane passes the interview, but reveals to Tanya that the restaurant is in Cardiff. Gethin returns to Walford the week after to attend Jane's leaving party. Jane has doubts about leaving Walford but later assures Gethin she wants to take the job, with him revealing his plans to set up a restaurant in Paris in a few years, with Jane as sous chef.

Freegard auditioned for the part of Gethin but thought his audition did not go well because he found it "difficult without any sense of context to get the full grasp of what your character's all about."[33] He filmed his scenes over two days in November 2011.[33] Gethin is the first Welsh character in EastEnders since Huw Edwards, played by Richard Elis from 1996 to 1999.[33]

The character and casting were announced on 14 April 2012.[35] Of her role in the soap, Banks said, "I've been a fan of EastEnders forever and am thrilled to be cast as a Branning. It's such a privilege to be working alongside Jamie [Foreman] and I can't wait to find out what's in store for Alice."[35] Alice has been brought up by her overprotective mother and elder brother, Joey. Alice decides to search for her father and arrives in the show's setting of Walford to meet him and get some answers.[35] Daniel Kilkelly of Digital Spy said, "Ever the optimist, nice girl Alice is eager and excited to meet Derek [...] but whether she'll be pleased by what she finds remains to be seen."[35] EastEnders's executive producer Lorraine Newman stated that Alice will allow the audience to see a softer side to Derek, adding that "being part of the Branning clan, there's a lot of history for the pair to draw upon which gives us great potential for the future."[36]
