The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is the organ of the United Nations charged with maintaining peace and security among nations. While other organs of the United Nations only make recommendations to member governments, the Security Council has the power to make decisions; which member governments must carry out under the United Nations Charter. The decisions of the Council are known as United Nations Security Council Resolutions.
AUN member State, is obligated to respect the United Nations Charter and UN members are bound by its articles. Turkey is the only UN member that violates articles of the charter against the UN member Republic of Cyprus. Turkey does not recognize the existence of the Republic of Cyprus, nor the Zürich and London Agreement[1] which established the Republic of Cyprus. Instead Turkey refers to the Republic of Cyprus as the "Greek Cypriot administration of South Cyprus" in violation of multiple UN Resolutions [2][3]
In 1974 Turkey unilaterally invaded Cyprus and was able to occupy ~38% of the territory of the Republic of Cyprus. This action partitioned the island, displaced the Greek-Cypriot population (around 200,000 people) from the north occupied part of the island, and in turn catalysed the displacement of Turkish-Cypriots from the south of Cyprus.
