Aattam (transl. The Play) is a 2024 Indian Malayalam-language suspense chamber drama film written and directed by Anand Ekarshi. The film won the 2023 Grand Jury Award at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles.[2] It was also chosen as the opening feature film at the 54th International Film Festival of India held at Goa.[3] The film was produced by Dr. Ajith Joy under the banner of Joy Movie Productions. The film is loosely based on Twelve Angry Men, an American courtroom drama.[4][5]
The story revolves around a sexual harassment accusation made by the sole actress of a theatre group against a popular movie star who joined their team recently. When a meeting is convened, the team members initially support the actress until it is informed by the unknowing actor about a potential offer to perform in Europe and it's related remuneration. The members who initially sided with the actress now shift sides and stories are unraveled, suspicions erupted and accusations are exchanged. The actress finally leaves the team and it was revealed that the offer to perform in Europe was a prank played by him as a payback for an earlier prank one of the teammate made on him. The movie ends with a drama performance by the actress with another team where she explains how by the end of the meeting everyone appeared to her as equivalent to the person who assaulted her and how the face of the culprit is now irrelevant to her despite the accused wanting to expose himself. After screenings at IFFLA, IFFI and IFFK, Aattam was released in theaters on 5 January 2024 to acclaim from audiences and critics.[7][8][9][10][11][12]
