Afrim Gashi (Macedonian: Африм Гаши; born on 9 November 1977) is a Macedonian politician and the Speaker of the Assembly of North Macedonia.[1]

Biography

Afrim Gashi was born on November 9, 1977, in Skopje, then in SR Macedonia, SFR Yugoslavia. He is an ethnic Albanian. In his youth, he attempted to become a musician. He completed primary and secondary in his hometown. In 2007, he graduated from the Faculty of Law at the State University in Tetovo. In 2021, he received his master's degree in political science at the Institute for Legal, Sociological and Political Studies at the University "St. Cyril and Methodius"inSkopje.[2]

In 2011, he founded the nationwide magazine "Shenja" and until 2014 he was its editor-in-chief. Since 2014, he has also been active in politics, founding the Besa Movement.[3] He is its initiator, designer and ideator, while for some time he also held the office of its General Secretary.

In the early parliamentary elections of 2016, Afrim Gashi was elected deputy, running in electoral unit no2.

Gashi has been leader of the Alternativa political party since its founding in 2019 until 2024. He is a member of Parliament from 2016 to 2020 and from 2020 to 2024.

Gashi was elected president of the Macedonian Assembly on 28 May 2024, by the "VLEN" Coalition led by Alliance for Albanians Taravari's-led, BESA, Alternativa, Democratic Movement and support of Albin Kurti with his party Vetëvendosje.
