Anatoliy Volodymyrovych Trubin (Ukrainian: Анатолій Володимирович Трубін; born 1 August 2001) is a Ukrainian professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Primeira Liga club Benfica and the Ukraine national team.

After coming through Shakhtar Donetsk's youth academy, he was promoted to the first team five years later. He broke into the starting line-up in 2020, aged 17, helping Shakhtar win three Ukrainian Premier League and a Ukrainian Cup, before moving to Benfica in 2023.

After representing Ukraine at various youth levels, Trubin was called up to the full international side for the first time in March 2021, and played at UEFA Euro 2020 and Euro 2024.

Club career

[edit]

Shakhtar Donetsk

[edit]

Born in Donetsk, Trubin began his youth career at Azovstal-2 Mariupol, and joined the academy of Shakhtar Donetsk in 2014. In February 2019, he began training with the first team, being included in Shakhtar main team squad for a UEFA Europa League match against Eintracht Frankfurt. He made his professional debut on 26 May, keeping a clean sheet in a 4–0 league win against Mariupol.[2]

Trubin had his breakthrough in the 2020–21 season, taking club legend's place Andriy Pyatov in the starting eleven, making 30 appearances, as he made his debut in the Champions League in a 3–2 away win against Real Madrid on 21 October 2020, and also had two clean sheets against Inter Milan in the competition, being creddited as the club's player of the season by Shakthar's fans.[3]

On 23 February 2023, in the second leg of the UEFA Europa League Knockout round play-offs, after Shakthar drew 3–3 on aggregate with Rennes, Trubin was named man of the match, after he made three saves in a penalty shoot-out to help his side progress to the round of 16.[4] He would make 28 appearances in the league, keeping 14 clean sheets, as Shakthar won the league title.

In July 2023, with a year left on his contract, Shakhtar negotiated with Inter Milan regarding a potential transfer of Trubin to replace André Onana, who had recently left Inter. However, negotiations between both clubs broke down, after Inter failed to meet Shakhtar's asking price. Meanwhile, Trubin publicly asked to leave the club. Shortly after, Benfica expressed their interest in acquiring Trubin's services, as the two clubs proceeded to begin negotiations.[5][6]

Benfica

[edit]

On 10 August 2023, Trubin joined Primeira Liga club Benfica by signing a contract until 2028,[7] on a transfer worth €10 million plus €1 million depending on objectives, with Shakhtar Donetsk also entitled to 40% of the profit of a future sale.[8]

Afterwards, for first games of the season, Trubin remained a backup to Samuel Soares, who took Odysseas Vlachodimos' place after he left the club, before eventually making his debut on 16 September, starting in a 2–1 away win against Vizela in the Primeira Liga.[9] After the match, his manager Roger Schmidt stated that "he gave Soares a few games, while Trubin adapted to the team and gained confidence, until it was the best time for him to start".[10]

International career

[edit]

Trubin represented Ukraineatunder-16, under-17, under-18, under-19 and under-21 levels, for a total of 31 caps. He was called up to the senior side by Andrey Shevchenko on 5 March 2021, for 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against France, Finland and Kazakhstan.

He made his senior debut for Ukraine national team on 31 March in a World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan.[11] Trubin was included in the squad for Euro 2020.[12] After finishing as one of the best third-placed teams, Ukraine was eventually eliminated in the quarter-finals by England on 3 July, after a 4–0 loss at Stadio OlimpicoinRome.[13]
