This category is for Métis peoples and topics in the United States. Métis are a specific ethnic group descended from French, Scottish, and English colonists and Great Lakes and Plains Native American peoples from the 16th and 19th centuries at the height of the fur trade. Historically, Métis people spoke the Michif language, the noum “Métis” is derivastes from a French word that mean “mixed race” or “miscegenation“, but relates with the French, Scottish and English colonial empire origins.
