All included banner

[edit]

Why do we have the banner saying, "For convenience, all Mass shootings in the United States should be included in this category. This includes all the mass shootings by state and by year that can also be found in the subcategories." When/where was this decided? Why not just put them in subcategories? ---Another Believer (Talk) 03:19, 3 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Tinton5: Do you know if this was discussed somewhere? ---Another Believer (Talk) 03:20, 3 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think it helps readers to display both the parent and child categories. The {{all included}} template is meant for categories whose subsets ... have some special characteristic of interest. There's nothing particularly special about, say, mass shootings in New Jerseyormass shootings in 1974 compared to other places and times. Mass shootings seem to occur more often where there are more people. Even gun-control laws that differ by state don't seem to be a huge factor; California has had plenty of mass shootings despite having strict gun control. The sad fact is that there are so many mass shootings in the US that lumping them all together under a single category seems kind of pointless. --Sangdeboeuf (talk) 20:12, 18 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
On second thought, looking at the examples under WP:DUPCAT like Category:Mountains of Switzerland, I can see how having all the members of the various sub-categories listed on the main category page might help readers navigate to their desired article(s). This is a little more difficult here because of the sheer number of mass shootings, but still potentially useful. --Sangdeboeuf (talk) 22:11, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
