Josiah Boornazian is an American alto saxophonist, composer,[1] educator, electronic musician,[2] and visual artist.[3]

Early Life[edit]

Boornazian was born in Ridgecrest, California, and was raised in Ridgecrest, California; Fresno, California; and Bakersfield, California. He was taught saxophone and clarinet at age 11 by his stepfather. At the age of 15 he was playing in local bars, restaurants, and other venues in and around Bakersfield, CA.

Career[edit]

Boornazian holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Miami Frost School of Music, a Master of Arts degree from the City College of New York, and a Bachelor of Music degree from California State University, Northridge. He is currently the Director of Jazz Studies at University of Utah.[4] Before this appointment, he taught applied saxophone and jazz studies at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, music technology at Broward College, jazz and music appreciation at the City College of New York, and applied saxophone, jazz performance, and musicology at the University of Miami Frost School of Music

He has been part of several bands, including the Hot House West Orchestra,[5] Teddy P,[6] the Gil Evans Orchestra, the New York Voices, and the South Florida Jazz Orchestra. He has also worked with Ari Hoenig, Arturo Sandoval, Ben Wendel, Brianna Thomas, Cyrille Aimee, Dafnis Prieto, Dan Weiss, Dave Grusin, Dave Holland, Dave Liebman, David Binney, Diane Schuur, Donny McCaslin, Drew Gress, Eivind Opsvik, Ferenc Nemeth, Gil Goldstein, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Ignacio Berroa, Jacob Sacks, Janis Seigel, Jimmie Vaughan, Jimmy Heath, John Beasley, John Daversa, John Escreet, John Faddis, Kenny Wollesen, Lew Soloff, Marcus Strickland, Mark Egan, Mark Farina, Massimo Biolcati, Mike Clark, Nir Felder, Shelly Berg, Tom Scott, Wayne Krantz, and Will Downing.
