Dutta, also spelled Datta (IPA: ['dʌtə]), is an Indian family name[1] Its variation is Dutt.

The surname is found primarily among Bengali Kayasthas,[2][3] Assamese Kalitas (Baro-Bhuyans) and also among Suvarna Baniks and GandhabaniksinBengal.[4][5] The surname is also used by the Mohyal BrahminsofPunjab.[6]

Datta means "given" or "granted" in Sanskrit and is also an alternative name for the Hindu deity Dattatreya.
