G. V. Markandayan is an Indian politician currently serving as a member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from the Vilathikulam constituency, representing the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party. With a notable political career, Markandayan previously held the position of MLA from 2011 to 2016, representing the same Vilathikulam constituency under the banner of the Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party. He is also ivolved in the leadership of the Ambal Educational Trust and Ambal Kosalai, reflecting his commitment to societal progress and development.

Political Career

[edit]

He was appointed as the Spokesperson of Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party. In the political landscape of Tamil Nadu, Markandayan's journey took a significant turn during the 2019 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly by-elections when the AIADMK party denied him a ticket. This decision led Markandayan to contest independently as a rebel candidate from the Vilathikulam constituency, thereby resigning as the spokesperson of AIADMK. Consequently, the AIADMK leadership expelled him from the party, marking a pivotal moment in his political career. Despite the odds, Markandayan's independent candidacy garnered significant attention, securing a notable 28,000 votes.
