History

[edit]

The council was formed in 1989, replacing Greymouth County Council (1868–1989)[3] and Runanga County Council (1912–1989).[4]

In 2020, the council had 78 staff, including 10 earning more than $100,000. According to the right-wing Taxpayers' Union think tank, residential rates averaged $1,739.[5]

In 2021 former Chief Executive Paul Morris begun the controversial Customer Focused Council project which resulted in 18 positions being disestablished including all executive level positions and various middle management positions, which resulted in eight newly created positions.

In 2024, Council Chief Executive Paul Morris, resigned on the 7 March 2024, effective immediately. Mayor Gibson said "Grey District Council have accepted the resignation of CEO Paul Morris, effective 7 March 2024, to allow him to pursue further opportunities available to him. We wish him all success in his new venture." Council appointed an Interim Chief Executive Paul Pretorius former Chief Executive of 22 years prior to Paul Morris. Recruitment has begun for a permanent CE.
