Definition [ edit ]
The muslim Halders used to be a mid rank officer, originating in Mughal Bengal (Subah Bangla) performing the duties of a keeper of the accounts (hal-khata).
The Hindu halder is like the kshatriya surnames such as Singh, Rajput, Chauhan in India.
It has also it's roots in Persian language, where 'hal' means book of accounts and 'dar' means keeper/owner, just like Sikdar , Tarafdar , Dastidar, etc. Among Bengali Hindus, this surname is found in Kayasthas.[2] [3]
