Alma materHEC Paris
OccupationPartner of Apollo Global Management

Jean-Luc Allavena, born in Monaco on June 29, 1963, is a Monegasque businessman and company director. He joined the investment fund Apollo Global Management as a partner in 2007 and is Founding Chairman of Atlantys Investors. This independent private equity structure invests on its own or in partnership with other funds.[1]

Biography[edit]

He completed his secondary studies at the Lycée Massena, then graduated from HEC Paris in 1986. Jean-Luc Allavena began his career at the Paribas bank (1986–88), then joined the Lyonnaise des Eaux group – now Engie – in 1989 – as financial controller.[2]

In 1992 he became financial director of Techpack International. The cosmetics and luxury product packaging company was the subject of one of the first major LBOs carried out in France, with Pechiney and LBO France as shareholders. He was managing director from 1996, then succeeded in May 1999 the founding president of the company, Alain Chevassus.[3] When Pechiney bought the entire capital, Jean-Luc Allavena became director of its cosmetology-luxury division.[4]

In 2000 Arnaud Lagardère called him to his side as deputy general manager of Lagardère Média, to take charge of the group's development strategy and improve its profitability, a mission which he carried out successfully.[5] At the same time, he became managing director of Lagardère Active (formerly Europe 1 Communication) and director of the group's three other main branches: Hachette Livre, Hachette Filipacchi Médias and Hachette Distribution Services.[6]

Coming from an old Monegasque family, Allavena headed the office of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco from 2005 to 2006, responsible for the organization and main orientations of the start of the new sovereign's reign.[7]

In 2007 Allavena joined the investment fund Apollo Global Management in London as a partner. Apollo is one of the largest alternative asset managers in the world with a portfolio of approximately $200 billion.[8]

In particular he initiated the acquisition in 2010 of Alcan Engineered Products – formerly Pechiney, with the Strategic Investment Fund. The company, renamed Constellium, was successfully listed on the New York stock exchange in May 2013. Eager to finance major French industrial projects, Jean-Luc Allavena made other successful industrial investments including Monier, Latécoère, Verallia.[9]

He is now president and founder of Atlantys Investors.

Until 2020 Jean-Luc Allavena was a director of the Altice Group of Verallia, and of the Paris-Bertrand-Sturdza bank.

Volunteering[edit]

Allavena has been involved in community volunteering for several decades. He was president of the HEC Alumni Association from 2001 to 2003 then honorary president, as well as president of the HEC Foundation (2003–2005) then honorary president.[10] He was notably at the origin of the first fundraising campaigns among HEC Paris graduates.[11]

Allavena was president of the French–American Foundation from 2010 to 2015 (then honorary president), which is dedicated to strengthening ties between France and the United States.[12]
