His father Vladimir went missing in 1945, and is thought to have been killed by the Yugoslav Partisans.[1] Mrzljak was ordained a priest in 1969 by Cardinal Franjo Kuharić.

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop of Zagreb on 29 December 1998 and he was consecrated a bishop on 6 February 1999.[2]

Pope Benedict XVI named him Bishop of Varaždin on 20 March 2007.[2]

Pope Francis accepted his resignation on 1 August 2019.[3]
