Jurassic World 4 is the unofficial title of an upcoming American science fiction action film. The untitled film will be the seventh in the Jurassic Park franchise following Jurassic World Dominion (2022), which was the third to use the Jurassic World branding. The film is directed by Gareth Edwards and written by David Koepp, who wrote the first two installments, Jurassic Park (1993) and The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997). The film will star Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Rupert Friend, Mahershala Ali, Luna Blaise, and David Iacono.

Development of the film was reported in January 2024, and had been underway for some time. Edwards was hired as director a month later, and casting commenced shortly thereafter. Principal photography began in June 2024, in Thailand, with subsequent filming to take place in Malta and the United Kingdom.

In the United States, Universal Pictures is scheduled to release the film on July 2, 2025.

    Development[edit]

According to producer Frank Marshall, the plot of Jurassic World Dominion (2022) would mark "the start of a new era", in which humans have to co-exist with dinosaurs.[1][2] Director and writer Colin Trevorrow, who spent nine years working on the Jurassic World trilogy, said in May 2022 that he would likely not return for another film, except in a possible advisory role.[3]

In late January 2024, it was reported that a new Jurassic film was in development by Universal Pictures, with David Koepp writing the screenplay, after previously working on Jurassic Park (1993) and its sequel The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997).[4] He also devised the basic storyline of Jurassic Park III, but later declined an offer to write a script for Jurassic World, as he felt he had nothing left to contribute to the series.[5][6][7] Like the Jurassic World films, the new installment would be produced by Marshall and Patrick Crowley through The Kennedy/Marshall Company, while Steven Spielberg would return as executive producer through Amblin Entertainment.[4][8] The film would reportedly launch a "new Jurassic era" with an all-new storyline. The characters from the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World trilogies, namely those of actors Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, would likely not return.[4][9]

Development of the project had been underway for some time,[4][10] with several drafts already written by Koepp.[8] The producers had also done some pre-production work, including dinosaur designs, meaning that any creative input from the eventual director would be minimal.[8][11] The position was reportedly described as being "more shooter than auteur", as the producers sought to have more creative control compared with Dominion,[8] which was negatively received by critics.[12]

David Leitch was briefly in talks to direct the film during early February 2024,[13] but negotiations broke down after several days,[14] as the project's progress up to that point left little room for his creative input.[8][15] Gareth Edwards was confirmed as director later that month.[16] Spielberg enjoyed Edwards' 2014 film Godzilla, and Edwards is a fan of the original Jurassic Park.[12][17] Edwards had planned to take a break from studio filmmaking and was busy writing a new film when he was offered the Jurassic World project, which he described as "the only movie that would make me drop everything like a stone and dive right in."[16]

Casting was underway in March 2024, and continued over the next three months. Scarlett Johansson,[18] Jonathan Bailey,[19] Manuel Garcia-Rulfo,[20] Rupert Friend,[21] Mahershala Ali, Luna Blaise, David Iacono, and Audrina Miranda eventually joined the project.[22][23][24][25] Glen Powell, who voiced Dave in the animated series Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous (2020–2022), turned down a role.[26] Jennifer Lawrence had been in consideration for the role that ultimately went to Johansson.[27] Paleontologist Steve Brusatte returns from the previous film as dinosaur consultant.[28]

    Filming[edit]

Principal photography began on June 13, 2024, in Thailand.[29][30] Filming will last a month there,[31] and will take place at Khao Phanom Bencha National ParkinKrabi,[32] Ko KradanatHat Chao Mai National ParkinTrang, and Ao Phang Nga National ParkinPhang Nga.[33] Filming will also take place from July to September 2024, at the Malta Film Studios in Kalkara, Malta,[34] before moving to London and Sky Studios Elstree in the United Kingdom.[35][36][37] Filming is expected to wrap on October 18, 2024.[30] John Mathieson serves as the cinematographer.[38]

    Release[edit]

The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 2, 2025.[13][4]
