Kolia Bhomora Setu, an existing bridge completed in 1987, is a 3.015 km long pre-stressed concrete road bridgeonNH-715 over the Brahmaputra RiverinTezpur Assam state of India, which connects TezpurinSonitpur district on northern bank with KaliaborinNagaon District on the south bank. It is named after the Ahom General Kolia Bhomora Phukan.[1][2][3] A new Bhomoraguri-Tezpur Bridge 3.040 km long,[4] few meters parallel to the existing Kolia Bhomora Setu, is opened in 2021.[5]

History[edit]

This bridge is named after Ahom General Kalia Bhomora Borphukan, who planned to construct a bridge over Brahmaputra river in the reign of Kamaleswar Singha, while this was going at progress, his sudden death caused its abandonment.[6]

In 1987, it was inaugurated by the then PM of India, Rajiv Gandhi, after completing its construction from 1981 to 1987.[3] On 14 April 1987, India Post issued an INR2 commemorative stamp of this.[7][8] In 1988, American Concrete Institute awarded Hindustan Construction Company the Certificate of Merit for the Most Outstanding Concrete Structure.[9]

NRS AS, a wel known manufacturer specializing in comprehensive bridge construction equipment, delivered a quantity of "BRIDGEBUILDER" FORMTRAVELER (BBFT) units tailored for Free Cantilever Construction to the esteemed U. P. State Bridge Corporation Ltd. These BBFT units, categorized under "Type 11-A12-51 b/c," feature impressive specifications:[10]

In 2016, the collection of toll was stopped due to complaints that the bridge construction cost was Rs. 80 crore which was below tollable ceiling of Rs. 100 crores.[11]
