Location of Leederville railway station

Leederville railway station is a railway station on the Transperth network in Western Australia. It is located on the Yanchep line, 3.2 kilometres (2.0 mi) from Perth Underground station serving the suburb of Leederville.

History

[edit]

Leederville station was constructed by John Holland Constructions under a $1 million contract awarded in mid-1992.[1] John Holland won an award at the Excellence in Construction Awards in 1993 for the company's work on Leederville station.[2]

Leederville station opened on 20 December 1992 in the median strip of the Mitchell Freeway.[3]

In 2003, the contract for extending the platforms on seven Joondalup line (now Yanchep line) stations, including Leederville station, was awarded to Lakis Constructions. The platforms on these stations had to be extended by 50 metres (160 ft) to accommodate 150-metre-long (490 ft) six-car trains, which were planned to enter service. Along with the extensions, the platform edges were upgraded to bring them into line with tactile paving standards. Leederville was the first station to begin being extended.[4] Work at this station was completed by April 2004.[5]

In 2012 a double-ended turnback siding was opened between the tracks at the city side of the station, constructed as part of a $19.8 million program to improve the resilience of the Transperth network during disruptions.[6]

Future

[edit]

In 2024, City of Vincent Mayor Alison Xamon and Town of Cambridge Mayor Gary Mack called on the state government to upgrade Leederville station, saying it is "holding up the revitalisation of the surrounding precinct". Xamon said that disability access is poor and that the footbridge does not have any shelter.[7]

Services

[edit]

Leederville station is served by Transperth Yanchep line services.[8]

Leederville station saw 937,581 passengers in the 2013-2014 financial year.[9] In March 2018, Leederville station had approximately 2,700 boardings on an average weekday, making it the fourth least used station on the Yanchep line.[10]
