It is owned by the Town of Santa Rosa.[1] The original runway, 08-26, was a section of old U.S. Highway 66 prior to the construction of Interstate 40. The second runway, 01-19, was added in the mid-1990's.

Although most U.S. airports use the same three-letter location identifier for the FAA and IATA, this airport is assigned SXU by the FAA but has no designation from the IATA[2] (which assigned SXUtoSoddu, Ethiopia[3]).
