Costello[edit]

This page originally had John A. Costello becoming premier of Ireland on 11th of February and Eamon de Valera resigning as taoiseach on the 18th. In fact, premier and taoiseach are one and the same. I checked the Dáil debates and the debate on the nomination of a new taoiseach took place on the 18th. De Valera was defeated and was thus deemed to have resigned. Costello was nominated and then duly appointed by the President of Ireland. I made one other technical switch. It is technically incorrect to talk about being Taoiseach of Ireland in 1948. The word 'Ireland' was taken to refer to the 32 county nation. The 26 county state was named Éire in the 1937 constitution. From 1st April 1949, the generally used term to refer to the 26 county state is the Republic of Ireland. Between 29th December 1937 and 1st April 1949, the correct term for the 26 county state (as opposed to the 32 county nation) was Éire. Though to complicate matters, Éire is still the constitutional name. Ireland is the diplomatic name (though some states refuse to use it), the Republic of Ireland is the description and the often used Irish Republic is non-existent bullshit that only refers to the UDI state between 1919 and 1922! And yes it is confusing. Blame Eamon de Valera and his stupid name games in the 1937 constitution for causing all the confusion. Even Irish people find the whole thing a mess. (To avoid any confusion, I have put after Éire (formerly the Irish Free State) yes, yet another bloody name!. Or I will do when I go back to the page.

By the way, to show just how confusing it all is, Éire is actually gaelic for . . . Ireland! But Article 4 made clear that Éire was the name, Ireland a secondary translation, with Éire the state name. It is even more complex than that but I won't bore you with the details. BTW, just in case you noticed it, my usernic, Éireann is the genitive of Éire, FearÉIREANN meaning man of Ireland - more utterly useless information. :-) FearÉÍREANN 00:28 19 May 2003 (UTC)

Layout[edit]

I have put a general comment on year layout on my talk page, particularly on the way year by topic is dealt with. There are three different variants and I would like agreement to standardise. This would involve deleting the year by topic from the paragraph list on this page but keeping the box at the top --BozMo 14:10, 5 May 2004 (UTC)(talk)[reply]

Format[edit]

Calendar[edit]

The calendars exist on this year but not on others. Also, they begin with Monday which is contrary to American calendars. I am not sure what standard usage is elsewhere. Should they be standardized? JodyB Roll, Tide, Roll 18:11, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have no certain info on which to base an edit but I do note that altho' this article reports that Jim Carroll was born on August 1, 1948, Wikipedia's article "Jim Carroll" reports that he was born on August 1, 1949.

Whosoever has responsibility for the entry may wish to track down the correct info.LAWinans (talk) 19:32, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Collage thoughts[edit]

Any thoughts on the 1948 Collage. 4me689 (talk) 15:02, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The 1948 Fukui earthquake should be replaced by the 1948 Ashgabat earthquake, which caused over 100,000 deaths. However, there are no images of this earthquake on Wikimedia Commons, which is disappointing, but perhaps the city center of Ashgabat can be used as a substitute. The Jeju uprising is also important, as it resulted in the killing of 14,000 to 100,000 civilians, but I am unsure which event to use as a replacement. And I tried to upload the restored versions of the collage images of 1947, 1948, and 1949, but I found that I couldn't because the three images you made were in PNG format, while the ones I made were in JPG format. I couldn't overwrite your images. If I use a file format conversion software, the resulting files will be over 10MB, which is too large for me to upload with my internet speed.
