This article included spurious claims that the rioters were members of leftist insurgents, the FMLN. At the time the rumors were, and many articles stated, that the rioters were right-wing Salvadoran contras trained by the CIA to disrupt the Sandinistas in neighboring Nicaragua. There was no appreciable FMLN graffiti and any such claim is propaganda. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bbcrock (talk • contribs)

I cleaned up the article by adding inline citations and removing uncited material that looked spurious or dubious. Credible-looking material that lacked citations was given a "citation needed".
